[AD] Tommy’s Splashathon 2019 – Fundraising for life-saving research

5 July 2019

I’m working with Tommy’s to help promote their Splashathon at Waterbabies, a fundraising event to raise money for life-saving research and to help families that experience miscarriage, baby loss or premature birth.

Tommy's Splashathon 2019

I was devastated to see the statistics on paper that, every year, 1 in 4 women lose a baby during pregnancy or birth. That’s shockingly high! I had an ectopic pregnancy about 5 years ago, and at the time, I felt so lonely going through it because no one was talking openly about baby loss or miscarriage.

But when I shared my story, so many people reached out, telling me their own stories that I was glad I used my platform to help normalise the conversation around miscarriage and baby loss in some way.

So when Tommy contacted me asking if I wanted to help promote the Splashathon as a fundraising event for this cause, I was thrilled to be able to use my platform yet again to help raise any money for other families that have gone through the loss of a baby or pregnancy, and to fund important research so that, hopefully, a lot less people have to go through this heartache.

How you can help fundraise or join the Splashathon

The theme of this year’s Splashathon is Peppa Pig Pirates and Princesses. If you are a member of Waterbabies, you can take part by attending one of these special classes all Summer and even dress your little ones up as pirates or princesses.

We attended a class at our local Waterbabies and we loved it; all the mums, dads and kids were joining in, there were lots of activities in the water, including a challenge to swim a width – it was so much fun! You can find out more about the Splashathon here.

Even if you can’t attend a Splashathon class, you can still help. Tommy’s is hoping to raise £1M this year; if you can and would like to help, you can donate on the Splashathon fundraising page; whatever you can spare will be a big help! I found it very easy to donate, I used my PayPal account and it was all done within a couple of minutes.

I filmed a video sharing our swimming essentials for babies and toddlers, so if you are taking part in the Splashathon, or you have just started taking your kids swimming, click here to watch the video, and let me know what are your swimming essentials.

You can also take this fun quiz by Tommy’s and Waterbabies to find out what is your little one’s swim style!

Not the pregnancy announcement I had in mind, but… we’re expecting baby number 3! ❤️🙏🏻 I’m 11 weeks pregnant today and this is probably the most fitting photo to describe my first trimester so far: hyperemesis gravidarum.

I was going to wait until I was feeling better, until I had a bump to show, until I could put some makeup on… but who knows when that will be? I’ve lost over 15lbs, been admitted to hospital twice on IV fluids for dehydration, spent my birthday (and weeks on end!) in bed and have been put on so many meds I’ve lost count.

Today, as I was leaving the hospital on new meds and after a bag of fluids - feeling like a human being for the first time in over a month - I decided that writing this post, although cathartic for me, may be just what another HG sufferer needs to read to make them feel a little bit less alone.

This is not the beautiful “surprise” pregnancy announcement we’re used to seeing, but for the 1-3% of women who suffer with HG, it may be the only one you can manage.

So, this is where I’ve been hiding. Baby is doing well, mama not so well. But I’m hanging in there and taking one day at a time!

Baby is due September 2021! ❤️

“Anxiety is also feeling like you have no contro “Anxiety is also feeling like you have no control over your life and there’s a knot if your stomach. You feel like your world is crashing down around you and you’re expected to sit there and act like you’re fine.”

Yesterday was a right old day - I wasn’t myself. I needed silence to reset... but didn’t get it. So I carried on not sounding like myself, being curt, snappy, sometimes a bit hurtful.

Do you know when you just can’t snap out of it? You take a deep breath and promise you will react differently to a stressful situation, but a minute later you catch yourself spilling over before you even realise the pan was boiling.

I took some time to reflect in the evening and exposed everything that was causing me frustration, stress, anxiety and worry. Guess what the common denominator was?

A feeling of not being in control.

I’ve always needed some sort of order and control to feel like myself and right now we’re positivity not in control of anything really, are we?

I’m glad I can recognise the triggers for my anxiety and today I made sure I established some form of control first thing in the morning to give my day the best chance to be a good one.

So I cleaned the house, I made sure the puppy had plenty of naps, I scheduled 1-2-1 time with both kids and that made me feel so much better.

I know I only tackled the consequences, not the causes of my anxiety and my need to feel in control, but that was enough for me today.

There’s - always - more work to be done, but accepting the small wins is part of it.

How are you all feeling? Really, how’s your mind How are you all feeling? Really, how’s your mind right now? It’s so important to check in with ourselves instead of ignoring how we feel and burying our heads in housework, jobs, kids and life admin.

💫 What do I need?

That’s a good way to start. I’ll list a few things I need right now. They don’t all have to be grand things, sometimes I only need the smallest things.

1. I need to wash my hair.
2. I need silence.
3. I need to rearrange some rooms in the house (don’t know why I need this, but I really do).
4. I need to zero my inbox.
5. I need uninterrupted sleep.
6. I need a good hearty meal.
7. I need to exercise.
8. I need to smile.
9. I need to see my mum.
10. I need to put my needs first.

If I were to pick just one need right this second, I’d say number 2. I’m normally really sensitive to loud noises, but today... dear me! Even a slightly louder whisper was annoying me! 🙈
I mean... I can barely see him but I’m well jeal I mean... I can barely see him but I’m well jealous of this cosy situation! 😍 Oh Benji boy, you’re bringing us so much joy already! 🐶🤎
