Things don’t always go to plan… no matter how

Things don’t always go to plan… no matter how much I plan.

I really needed this reminder after spending the last two nights in hospital being told: “Change of plans! You now have Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH), which will likely lead to another case of Preeclampsia and highly unlikely you’ll reach your due date, maybe not even have a term baby.”

As natural planner I find it really hard when plans change, especially these big, life-changing decisions like what’s going to happen to me & baby from now until the end of this pregnancy? Will she come much earlier than expected? Will my meds keep working or will they stop working?

My PIH is being managed by medication and we’re being closely monitored; that’s the best we can do right now. Things can change at any point, and that’s completely out of my control.

I need to learn to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens. Any tips on how I do that? 🤷🏻‍♀️

A little preeclampsia scare.

I woke up today and my hands were so swollen, I could barely close them. So I got my at-home blood pressure machine out and the numbers worried me.

As always, I felt silly worrying because what if everything was fine and I was just bloated?

So I waited a bit and measured it again… my BP was going up and up and up.

When it got to 160/109 I knew I wasn’t being silly; I needed to get it checked. What if this was the start of preeclampsia, again?

I’m so glad I came. There’s no protein in my urine, so doctors don’t think it’s preeclampsia (yet), but I’m being monitored, cared for and baby seems super happy in there - thank God!

I’ve had medication to lower my BP and will be kept overnight, just until everything is stable. But this is a little reminder to always, always get things checked if something doesn’t feel right, especially during pregnancy when anything could change in a very short space of time.

So thankful for the NHS and all the staff looking after me. And thank you for all your well wishes on Stories! I’m in the best place I could be right now. Little Miss Sunshine always keeping on my toes! ☺️💗

Last week marked the start of all the baby prep! I’ve ordered our @doonauk car seat, started moving some furniture & even re-watched my “What’s in my hospital bag” videos to write a list of what I want to pack this time around.

As I’ve said before, both my babies were born at 37 weeks, so I’m aiming for that more than my due date, which means I only have less than 9 weeks left!

Here’s what’s been happening over the last week:

😮 Braxton Hicks. I’ve been having regular tightenings this week! They don’t freak me out at all, but man they are much more uncomfortable third time around… like everything else. If you’ve never experienced them before, Braxton Hicks are “practice contractions”, they are not a sign of labour and a lot of women feel them in their third trimester. If you’re not sure if what you’re feeling is BH, give your midwife or doctor a call for your peace of mind.

🤰🏻 Bump has dropped a bit. I’ve been carrying this pregnancy quite high up in my ribs pretty much the whole time, but this week, all of a sudden I could breath! That’s when I noticed my bump had dropped. It makes sense, as our last scan shows she’s already head down (not engaged), although she’s also feet down! The little gymnast seems to find it really comfortable to curl up with her feet right on top of her head. Go figure!

🧠 Pregnancy brain! I’d forgotten (😉) this was a thing. I’m constantly forgetting my words mid-sentence and saying things that don’t make any sense. Oh, and I also seem to have got into a habit of blurting out words in Portuguese whilst talking in English, without even realising it. We’ve had some funny moments this week!

🗣 My voice has changed…. Have you experienced this before? I vaguely remember thinking my voice was a bit deeper towards the end of my 2nd pregnancy, but this time around it’s definitely deeper and croakier too! I keep hearing myself and thinking it’s my mum talking. I wonder what causes this!

I love living in the UK. It’s the place I call h

I love living in the UK. It’s the place I call home, it’s where I’ve always dreamed of living and my dreams did come true.

I’m one of the lucky ones.

But one of the many sacrifices some of us expats, who have found a home in a different country, have had to make, is leaving our “village” behind.

Our support network, the people who have known us since we were kids, the ones that, now we’re mums, we know we can completely and wholeheartedly rely on.

Of course, as time goes by you start to build a new village around you. You have friends, maybe even join a new family, as well as starting your own, and perhaps you don’t ever feel truly alone.

But there are moments when that aloneness hits you. When you think of the important people who you wish were five minutes down the road, but instead, are 5 thousand miles across the world.

And these moments are here more and more often the older I get. The bigger my own family grows, the more I wish they could be here with me.

To be here for the daily laughter, the tears, the funny work stories, the frustrations, the milestones.

To be here for me.

So we stay as close as we can. We Facetime, we Whatsapp, Email, send voice notes, video messages… and every time we talk, even if weeks have gone by, it’s like no time has passed at all.

This is what I want my children to take from living away from your family: it will be hard, there’s no two ways about it, but if you do decide that’s the life you want to pursue, you have to be willing to put in the effort to stay close, despite the distance.

Because family matters, and we will always be there for each other. No matter where. ❣️

27 weeks pregnant 💗 Baby is the size of a bunch

27 weeks pregnant 💗 Baby is the size of a bunch of bananas and currently measuring above the 97th centile! Swipe for screenshots of my babies’ growth charts.

I was looking at James & Bella’s growth charts, and it seems like all my babies go through a growth spurt around 27-28 weeks. But then, somewhere around 33-36 weeks, their growth tails off below the 10th (Bella) and below the 5th (James) centiles, hence I’ve had two inductions at 37 weeks and two IUGR babies.

I can’t pretend that’s not on my mind this time. That thought is always there, but this time, instead of hoping to get to 40 weeks, I’m fully prepared to give birth at 37 weeks, which is in 10 weeks time!

I’m having regular growth scans to keep an eye on baby and hopefully catch any reduction in growth as soon as it happens.

Now for a little symptoms update:

😫 Pelvic girdle pain. For the past week I’ve REALLY struggled with it. The constant pelvic pain whenever I move is excruciating! I’ve bought a support belt, but I can only really wear it when I’m standing up, and I actually spend most of my day up and down. I have a referral form to submit for physiotherapy, hopefully that will give me some relief!

🥤 Gestational diabetes. I had a glucose test to determine if I have gestational diabetes, which could lead to having a really big baby! I’ve never been offered one before, but apparently because of my Brazilian background, I’m more like to develop it. I mean, the thought of a big baby has never crossed my mind, having had two under 5lbs babies, but we’ll see!

💉 Natural lip fillers! I feel like I’ve plumped up my face full of fillers at the moment… I obviously haven’t! My lips are so full and my cheeks are really plump. The word “blooming” definitely comes to mind!

👋🏻 Saying goodbye to the 2nd trimester. Next week I’ll enter the 3rd trimester. I’ve really enjoyed this trimester and I know I’ll look back with such fond memories of it. I’ve felt really happy, generally well and lucky to be pregnant. Though I’m also happy to be moving one step closer to meeting this little lady, who the kids have nicknamed “Little Miss Sunshine” ☀️
