It’s only mud, it’s only mud, it’s only... right, I think that’s enough mud, sweetheart. 😬

They love it, though. The filthier, the better.
⁣
But me? I just can’t. I can’t. I’m not a mud sort of person. Is that even a thing?
⁣
Despite all my “arghs” and “ews”, we got out in the rain, jumped in muddy puddles, made muddy potions. Well, they did and I watched. But at least I let them... and they loved it!

We chatted at bedtime and both said their favourite part of the day was getting all muddy.
⁣
If that isn’t reason enough to step out of my comfort zone, I don’t know what is. 💛

Woke up feeling good yesterday, but didn't know what to say about it.

✨ Living my best life... Positive vibes... Life is good... Happy. Nah!

Today, on the other hand, I woke up feeling a bit meh, and instantly knew how to connect with other people.

I realised how conscious I am of looking like I'm bragging about a good night's sleep, me time, losing weight, loving my job and my life.

Not only am I conscious of it, but I push these thoughts away from my mind when I'm talking to other people. It kind of feels like I'm asking for praise, and for someone who can't take a compliment, that's the worst!

I read this quote from @annamathur's Mind Over Mother book (really, you should get it if you haven't already!), which made me think about how it’s easier to connect to another human over shared struggles:

✨"We affirm anxieties in each other, making it feel acceptable to worry about the things that we do. It’s great to feel like we aren’t alone in this kind of worrying but it shouldn’t stop there.”

That's so true.

When I’m struggling to keep all the plates spinning I hear lots of “me too”.

And it’s lovely that we feel comfortable enough to open up about our own struggles, we've worked hard to get to this point.

But sharing an accomplishment, a happy memory, a mundane moment of joy... these don't get the same likes, comments, DMs.

This is mirrored in real life too. If you mention you’re struggling to feed your baby, you get so much support and empathy. But if you say feeding is a breeze, you get nothing or "you wait, it will come".

If we use this community simply to affirm each other’s anxieties, we are no better at dealing with them.

Yeah, sometimes is nice to have a little moan about a bad day... but it’s much richer for us all to invest some time in engaging with the good days too.

This isn't about the literal "likes", it's about retraining our brain to engage with someone's happy days in the same way we would when someone's shared a struggle.

I’m trying harder to speak up about my happy moments, as well as champion others', ask them questions about it instead of uttering a simple "well done". 💛

I’m proud of myself for trying.

Trying to be more on the sidelines and let the kids make mistakes.
⁣
Trying not to panic when they get close to the sea.
⁣
Trying to actually relax when all is calm instead of frantically folding the beach towels, gathering the buckets and spades, cleaning sand off the matt and hanging up wet clothes.
⁣
Trying to appreciate the happiness sandy toes brings to the children, even though it sends shivers down my spine.
⁣
Trying to remember that my body is a beach body, regardless of what the magazines say.
⁣
Trying to be on holiday, for real. Not just living the same life in a different house for a week, but actually feeling like I’m on vacation, allowing my shoulders to drop down, letting myself smile just because and not worrying about this, that and the other.

I don’t always get it right, but right now I’m trying and it’s been wonderful!
⁣
Who knew one needs to learn how to holiday?! Do you? 🙋🏻‍♀️💛

We don’t do soppy lovey-dovey stuff. We both even forgot it was our anniversary until the first message from family came through! 🙊

I used to ask at the end of each day “what have I achieved?”
⁣
Innocently thinking it was a way to hold myself accountable, to keep me from procrastinating, to boost my productivity.
⁣
But actually, it often brought a sense of failure for what I hadn’t achieved. I didn’t realise I was setting myself up for failure simply by trying to be productive.
⁣
So instead of “what have I achieved today?”, I’ve been experimenting with:
⁣
✨ How did today feel?
⁣
I usually find that how much I achieve is linked to how I’ve felt that day: distracted, positive, calm, worried, motivated, anxious.
⁣
By prompting me to think about how I feel before anything else, I give myself the chance to remember that I’m not a machine programmed to achieve and fulfil outcomes.
⁣
I’ve struggled to get through my to-do list this week because I’ve felt a bit burnt out and hormonal (that time of the month is nearing!).
⁣
This doesn’t reflect my ability to achieve, it tells me I need to add less to my to-do list, set the bar a bit lower and put myself first.
⁣
Growth is an undoing.
⁣
It’s not easy to question what I thought was right and flip it upside down. It takes effort to go against lifelong habits, but I see how much it helps me overcome things I thought I’d just have to forever grin and bear.
⁣
